Cape Cod Re-Visited

When our kids were between ages 5-15 Cape Cod was our most common vacation destination.  Many of my wife Martha’s siblings and their kids would join us as well; and as my sister-in-law Jane would say, “make lifetime memories”.   As our kids, and the nieces and nephews started working summer jobs it became more difficult to coordinate schedules.  So vacations revolved around the four of us and we broadened our horizons beyond Massachusetts.

Fast forward to this year with our daughter Molly a year out of college.  Vacation time is at more of a premium for her so we wanted to stay relatively local and decided to retrace our steps to Cape Cod.  It is always nice to visit some place new and play tourist, but there is something to be said for visiting someplace familiar.

There are several perks including:  1)  No guessing what you need to pack.  Flip flops, swimsuit, sunscreen and some good reading material.  2)  We already know what activities we want to do and the logistics involved.  As I’ve written about before, one of my favorite Cape activities is attending Cape Cod league baseball games.  The park for the local team is a five-minute walk from the house, so it doesn’t get any easier.  3)  The local grocery store is a five minute walk as well so if you forget something on the list for that night’s barbecue, or the pint of ice cream mysteriously goes missing it’s just another quick round trip.

Highlights included a lot of family cooking (which is fun when you are not trying to catch up on work afterwards or deal with household projects), Kan Jam (basically frisbee on the beach), watching the Olympics, and a lot of walks.  Nothing earth-shatteringly exciting, but all very relaxing.  Shockingly the only activity we somehow missed was supporting one of the many local ice cream shops.  So as my mother-in-law used to say; that gives us an excuse to visit again soon.

We hope your summer is going well and that you managed to have some fun outings!
