NYC Move
Where is the Elevator?
Interesting fact (at least to me) – any residential building in New York City over six stories is required to have an elevator. I realize there are many buildings in New York City with six stories or less that have elevators. Do you care to hazard a guess as to whether the six-story apartment building our daughter Molly recently moved to has an elevator? Last question on the quiz – on what floor is Molly’s new apartment located?
You probably have a sense for where this story is going. While fortunately Molly inherited her looks, brains and most of her life skills from her mother, she did get my packing genes. She was very organized and ready for moving day. Prior to the movers arriving her belongings were all in boxes, so we were not carrying a random lampshade and a vase, or a large box with her heaviest books, up six flights of stairs. With movers hired I was along for moral support and to help move the fragile objects. However, the moving company staff answering the phones did not pass along to the poor people doing the actual lifting that there was not an elevator for her sixth-floor apartment. Needless to say, they were a little annoyed.
I did not intend to sit around while the movers did all the heavy lifting; but I also did not anticipate a major workout. However, given this was their second move of the day and that they did not know about the six-floor walkup, we got more of a workout than we originally intended. If you can’t tell from the picture, the step tracker on Molly’s phone indicates that we walked 110 flights of stairs that day. So, I feel okay skipping leg day at the gym for a session.
The good news is that everything fits in the apartment, and nothing was damaged during the move. For those of you familiar with New York city geography Molly lives in a fun neighborhood known as Alphabet City and we are excited for her to start the next phase of her NYC exploration.
