Spontaneity - Who Has Time for That?
I am a planner by nature, but not only as it relates to finances. I like to plan out my personal time, and it is difficult for me to fully relax if I have not at least thought through what projects are on my to do list. Items can range from waging war with the leaves in my yard to dealing with a leaky faucet. I don’t need to attack the list immediately, but I need to have a general sense for when I will work on the projects.
So here is how my latest planning conundrum started. A couple weeks ago my daughter Molly and I were discussing the baseball playoffs, and specifically the Red Sox-Yankees series. We talked about how it would be fun to go to a game, but unfortunately all the games were in New York. Good for her living in NYC; a little less convenient for me. I was not sure if Molly asking about attending a game was a rhetorical question, but when I asked if we should look into getting tickets she enthusiastically said yes.
With some quick research I was able to find some relatively inexpensive tickets. Now to deal with my irrational fixation with ‘to do’ lists. Work and life in general were busy, but there were no meetings on the calendar and nothing so time sensitive it could not wait 48 hours. Plus, I knew very well that whatever items I checked off my to do list would be replaced by something else. And there was the obvious reason of getting a chance to visit Molly.
The Red Sox unfortunately lost the game, but I had a wonderful two days with Molly. A bad day at the ballpark was more than made up for with a lot of laughs and catching up. I guess a little spontaneity is a good thing.
